Welcome to Academically Intellectually Gifted
Dear Parents of AIG students,
Welcome back to AIG! I am excited to have your child join me this year for AIG classes and look forward to a wonderful year of authentic learning!
Just to give those of you that are new to AIG a little background information, I have been at Middle Creek since the doors opened in 2000! I started out as a 5th grade teacher but transitioned to the AIG teacher and have been in this role for 13 years. I really enjoy working with the AIG students and challenging them with authentic learning experiences. We currently have 12 months allotted for an AIG teacher at Middle Creek. I will continue to be a 10 month employee, therefore, when I am tracked out, Mrs. Janet Baxter will be covering for me and also working with your child. She is a veteran AIG teacher, and has a tremendous amount of experience working with elementary students. We feel that she will be a great asset to our AIG program.
I plan to keep in contact with you to share our units of study as well as any other pertinent AIG information. I will send out weekly or bi-weekly emails to keep you informed. I am attaching a form for you to update and return to me so that you can receive the updates. I also have an AIG website that you can visit at any time. http://mrswoodardaigwcpss.weebly.com/
I will also be holding my annual parent information sessions soon. Be on the lookout for an invitation via email and/or in your child’s weekly folder. If you are a parent of a 4th grade student, it may in your best interest to attend. If you are a parent of a 5th grader it may not be as necessary to attend as the material will be very similar to last year. Either way I am looking forward to meeting you all and explaining how the AIG program will work here at Middle Creek Elementary.
Most of you have concerns about scheduling and what that typically looks like. It can get quite tricky, especially in a year round school. I have worked many hours to create an equitable schedule for all tracks and will share that specific information with you at the meeting. Due to the number of AIG students it is not possible for me to see all of them at once; therefore I will be serving the students on a rotational basis of every 6 weeks. I will serve tracks 1 & 2 together and tracks 3 & 4 together during the first semester. The students will be pulled out to work on higher level units aligned with the standards that homeroom teachers will be teaching. Tracks 1 & 2 will begin receiving services on July 11th and tracks 3 & 4 will begin on August 20th.
Students will receive AIG services based on their area of identification: math and/or ELA. If your child is pulled out for AIG in ELA, s/he will miss ELA 45 minutes for that period in the regular classroom. The same is true for math. Students who are being pulled out are expected to be able to move back into the classroom and pick up on the missed content without receiving direct instruction from the teacher. Students are not expected to have more work to make up because they came out for AIG. However, they are expected to do the homework. If at any time you notice that your child is having difficulty in the regular classroom because s/he has missed classroom instruction, please let me know, and we can meet to discuss various options to adjust service delivery.
Although your child may not be getting direct services from me for 3 weeks of a 9 week period, they are still receiving differentiated assignments within the regular classroom. If you ever feel that your child is not being appropriately challenged please contact the child’s teacher and we can collaborate.
If you ever have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me at email@example.com or at Middle Creek at 919-773-9555.
